Juvenile Traffic Court

Most juvenile traffic violation cases are heard by the Court on Tuesday evenings beginning at 4:00 p.m. Traffic cases are scheduled for this time period to allow students to complete their school day before they come to court and because this is a more convenient time for most parents. Alleged juvenile traffic offenders should come to court with at least one of their parents or custodians, their drivers license and proof of insurance.

All first time juvenile traffic offenders are ordered to attend the Honda Teen Defensive Driving Program at Lexington, Ohio at a cost of $205. Usually, first time juvenile traffic offenders are not ordered to pay any fines or costs. However every case is assesed a $25.00 processing fee.

Second time traffic offenders are usually ordered to pay fines and costs of $130 to the Court, and an additional $25.00 processing fee. In addition, they are ordered to pay for and complete a Driver Improvement Program approved by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Finally, they are given a choice between and outright license suspension of 90 days, that results in an obligation to pay the BMV approximately $100 in fees and retaking the drivers test, OR a 180 day suspension with privileges to drive to and from school and to and from work, taking the most direct route and with no passengers. The 180 day choice also involves the payment of a $100 privilege fee.

Third time juvenile traffic offenders are ordered to pay $130 in fines and costs, plus the $25.00 processing fee, they are placed on probation to the Court, and are ordered to complete another Driver Improvement Program. They also receive a 365 day drivers license suspension without any discussion of privileges until 180 days have passed. This one year suspension also results in significant fees to be paid to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and significant auto insurance consequences.

Any driving behavior the Court considers to be reckless, such as drunk driving or extremely excessive speed, will result in more severe penalties, regardless of whether it is a first, second or third offense.

Any questions regarding Bureau of Motor Vehicles fees or regulations should be directed to the BMV at 614-752-7500.
