Passport Information

The Knox County Clerk of Courts is authorized by the U.S. Department of State to accept passport applications. This information will help you apply for and obtain a passport through the Clerk of Courts Office.

In order to leave or enter the United States and to enter most foreign countries, all U.S. citizens, including newborns, must have a passport issued in their own names. Both parents, or legal guardians, must be present at the time of submitting applications for children under 14 years of age. Minors 14 years or older, must appear in person with a parent or legal guardian to execute their applications.

Make sure that you apply for your passport at least three months in advance of your scheduled departure date. Your passport will typically arrive via U.S. mail 10 weeks after you submit your application.

An expedited passport may be obtained for emergency trips in which a departure is necessary in less than seven to ten business days. The Clerk of Courts can assist you in applying for the expedited passport.

You must apply for your passport in person:
  • if you are applying for the first time passport
  • if your most recent passport was issued more than 15 years ago
  • if you were a minor when your last passport was issued
  • you have an existing passport that has been damaged or lost.
If you are renewing a prior passport that was issued to you at the age of 16 years or older, you may be eligible to apply for the renewal by mail. Your most recent passport must have been issued within the past 12 years and must be undamaged.

The Clerk of Courts office will provide eligibility information, and be happy to answer all your questions about expediting passports and to explain documentation requirements by phone at (740)393-6788 or in person.

After you have completed the passport application bring your application to the Clerk of Courts office located on the second floor in the Knox County Service Center @ 117 East High Street, Mount Vernon. Our working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
