Notary Commissions

In the State of Ohio, a notary public is a person appointed and commissioned by the Governor of the State to:

  • administer oaths required or authorized by law;
  • take and certify depositions
  • Take and certify acknowledgements of deeds, mortgages, liens, powers of Attorney, and other written instruments
  • Receive, make, and record notorial protests

To become a notary in Knox County, you must be a resident of Knox County, be over the age of 18 years old, be a registered voter, and pass the notary test administered by the Knox County Bar Association. Your commission will be valid for five years.

You must personally appear in the office of the Clerk of Courts, located on the second floor in the Knox County Service Center located at 117 East High Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio, to complete the application. The cost is $18.00 or you may contact the Knox County Clerk of Courts Office at (740)393-6788 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. You may also visit www.sos.state.oh.us for further questions.

The notary test is given once per month and you will receive a testing schedule and a study guide book at that time.

If you do not reside in Knox County then you will need to contact the Clerk of Courts Office in the county that you reside in.

The Clerk of Courts is responsible for recording your notary commission and keeping them on file. Once you received your commission from the Secretary of State’s Office, you will be required to record that with the Clerk. The cost to record that is $5.00 and an extra $1.00 to administer the oath. Please note that you must record your notary in the county that you reside.
